Mid-Sized Back Garden

About This Project

Completed during lock down, this mid-sized back garden will be the perfect place to entertain as the world opens up again.

The Client Brief

Our clients had a garden design prepared by Tapestry Design Studios.  They had asked for a family friendly space with a moderate amount of maintenance and plenty of wildlife interest. The wanted the garden to reflect the traditional style of their property, but with a modern twist to bring it into the 21st century.

The Garden

Katie from Tapestry Design Studios re-imagined the space with a generously sized patio beside the property. Two steps, in the same porcelain pavers as the patio lead to a large lawn. A path leads along one side of the garden to a composite decking area which catches the evening sun and has glorious views of this pretty property.

Shrubs and trees surround the garden and cannot fail to attract wildlife.

Landscaping this mid-sized garden

You may be able to see that this garden actually slopes towards the house.  There was an existing retaining wall which negated the slope and divided the space into two terraces. As this was in good condition, we were able to update it with relatively little work – we simply added new coping stones to match the new step treads.

Beside the house, and wrapping around two sides is a large paved area.  We used Florence Storm Paving from London Stone for this.  It’s a lovely neutral colour that accentuates the colours in the planting and meets the brief for a traditional look with a modern twist.

The Holland Landscapes Team built a retaining wall using the same brick as the chimney stack on the house and then topped it with coping stones to match the patio.  This is a nice height for the homeowners to use as extra seating when they have guests.

Three broad steps lead up to a path, which in turn leads to an area of composite decking. Why composite decking? Because it’s incredibly easy to look after. We bought these decking boards from Saige Decking – a supplier who we trust to provide quality products.

Finally, a lush new lawn was laid with turf from Paynes Turf – we do like to support local businesses and of course, having turf delivered from just up the road means that it arrives nice and fresh on site and will look fabulous.
