To create a back garden which can be used for a young family which is practical, looks stylish, has an area for seating all year round and has a water feature. Garden lighting is also essential.
Type of property
A semi-detached house built in the late 90’s. Overlooked from many angles.
This back garden is located in Highwoods in Colchester.
Time taken to build
June 2012 – July 2012
A decking in the corner of the garden had been built by the previous owner, a shed sat next to the decking. This area was surrounded by gravel. A tiny patio laid by the house builder sat by the back door and the rest of the garden was laid to lawn.
The whole garden was completely cleared.
Sawn silver-grey granite was lad for the main patio and the seating area.
A double row of sawn blue-grey setts was laid as a border to the main patio.
Timber sleepers were laid to create the level changes and border to the lawn.
Softwood decking was laid to the rear of rear of the garden.
A bespoke water feature built using concrete blocks, rendered and painted.
A bespoke timber pergola with trellis sides and a polycarbonate roof to help keep the area dry.
A 1.5kw halogen heater was installed in the pergola to provide warmth in the cooler nights and to allow for all year round use of the barbeque.
Garden lighting, remotely controlled throughout the garden.
The lawn was replaced with artificial grass in 2016 for lower maintenance.
The existing ground is heavy clay. This would have needed to be excavated and replaced with good quality soil in all planting areas. To overcome the significant excavations for this small garden we raised the middle and rear sections of the garden, incorporated drainage and brought in new soil.
The planting scheme for this garden is simple with a number of the same variety of plant grouped together to form a bold and colourful planting scheme. Trees have been placed to provide privacy.
What our client says
“Dear Chris and Paul, Thank you for our beautiful garden. We use our garden at every opportunity and our children love the different shapes, levels and the water feature! The garden at night is stunning, we enjoy having friends round for barbeques and we have actually used the barbeque in the snow, thanks to the pergola and heater.”
